Een cryptocurrency is digitaal geld dat werkt via blockchaintechnologie — een gedecentraliseerd netwerk van computers dat transacties bijhoudt zonder tussenkomst van banken. Bitcoin was de eerste cryptocurrency, gelanceerd in 2009. Sindsdien zijn er duizenden varianten ontstaan, elk met een eigen doel en technologie.
In Nederland koop je crypto via een gereguleerde exchange. Je maakt een account aan, verifieert je identiteit (KYC), en koopt via iDEAL, SEPA-overboeking of creditcard. Marktkapitalisatie (marktcap) is de totale waarde van alle uitstaande coins van een cryptocurrency. Berekening: huidige prijs × aantal coins in omloop. Een hogere marktcap betekent over het algemeen een gevestigdere en liquidere markt. Bitcoin heeft de hoogste marktcap en bepaalt daardoor grotendeels het sentiment van de hele cryptomarkt.
BTC dominantie is het percentage van de totale cryptomarktcap dat Bitcoin vertegenwoordigt. Een hoge dominantie (boven 50%) duidt erop dat beleggers risicomijdend zijn en voor de meest gevestigde crypto kiezen. Een dalende dominantie signaleert vaak interesse in altcoins — dit wordt ook wel een “altseason” genoemd.
Cryptocurrency is een speculatieve belegging met hoge risico’s. Koersen kunnen in korte tijd sterk stijgen of dalen.
